What is Cowboy Butter?
Cowboy butter is a type of compound butter. It’s made by mixing softened butter with various ingredients to add flavor. The ingredients in cowboy butter include garlic, fresh parsley, chives, thyme, Dijon mustard, lemon zest and juice, paprika, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, and chili powder.
It’s not uncommon to finish a steak with some salty garlic butter on top, but dip it in – even better!
What Does Cowboy Butter Taste Like?
I tried it at home, and it was so easy! After letting the flavors meld together, I melted some to dip our London Broil into. It was delicious on both the steak and the roasted potatoes.
The compound butter has a savory, garlicky, oniony taste from the minced garlic and fresh chives. The other herbs give it an earthy flavor; the salt, spices, and citrus add a bold finish. It also has a hint of smokiness from the paprika and chili powder.
How Else Can I Use Cowboy Butter?
The question should be, what can you NOT put Cowboy Butter on? I suspect it would be delicious on fish, salmon, shrimp, pork tenderloin, or grilled chicken. Drizzle it on roasted vegetables like butternut squash, sweet potatoes, green beans, roasted potatoes, snap peas, or carrots. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
